So, you took the plunge and invested in solar power systems for your property, or perhaps you’re looking into the idea, either way you should have a good understanding of the maintenance required to keep your solar panels fully functioning. Solar energy is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Protect your investment and get the most out of your property with these important tips.

Be Prepared

To properly take care of your solar equipment you’ll need the right toolkit. There are various kits available that come with all the necessities: hose, squeegee, microfiber cleaning cloth, and soft brushes. However, it’s in your best interest to also look for items like extendable handle brushes to make the job easier.

Ensure Long-Term Benefits with Regular Upkeep

The good news is that breakthroughs in engineering and more sophisticated technologies have led to an increase in the life expectancy of solar panels meaning if you put in some work you can ensure a long life for your solar equipment.

Clean Your Equipment

Thankfully, rain will do most of the work for you, but it’s still a good idea to check your panels every so often and make sure there’s no buildup or residue that will prevent the absorption of solar energy. Pay special attention to your panels if your solar farm is in a dusty area or the area is experiencing high-pollen. Be mindful that you don’t damage the glass because even the tiniest of scratches can affect how much light gets to solar cells. Typically, panels only need to be cleaned once or twice a year—depending on your geographic location.

Regular Inspection

It’s good practice to take a look at your panels every few months, or particularly after large storms, just to make sure everything is in working order. Build-ups of pollen or tree material will cause you to lose power. The more regularly you check on your solar panels the quicker you can solve any problems that may arise. If you have a large lot consider assembling and training a group of trusted individuals to help make the process go by faster.

Monitor Output

To make sure your panels are efficient and giving you what you need be sure to regularly monitor their output. Installing an energy monitor will track your energy metrics. Analyze metrics before and after a cleaning to gauge the improvements and then you can start to establish a regular cleaning schedule based on the output. Don’t rely solely on the utility company’s numbers and make sure your entire system is performing correctly.

Whether you’re considering getting into a solar farm project or you have an existing solar system we hope these simple tips will make a big difference in protecting your investment and optimizing efficiency.
