North Carolina

In 1895 James Walker Tufts, a Massachusetts soda fountain magnate, bought 6,000 acres of land in the Sandhills of central North Carolina for $1.25 per acre. He intended to build a model New England village amidst the longleaf pines as a resort. After a few years Tufts hired a Scottish greenskeeper named Donald Ross to design four golf courses at his Pinehurst. America had its first significant golf resort and has been selling golf course property ever since. Golf is still the most popular activity to pursue on North Carolina land.

For generations North Carolina was known as the home of Andy Griffith's fictional Mayberry. But Andy would have a hard time recognizing the North Carolina little Opie would have grown up in since the television series left the air in 1968. The one-time agrarian state is now a center for technology and biosciences in the Research Triangle of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and banking and finance in the state's major metropolis of Charlotte.

Undeveloped land in the Blue Ridge Mountain mountain counties of western Carolina - Buncombe, home to Asheville, Henderson and Haywood - is being gobbled up for vacation homes and hunting properties. William Henry Vanderbilt constructed America's largest private home, Biltmore, here in the 1890s and most of his more than 125,000-acre estate has been transformed into the Pisgah National Forest. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which attracts 20 million motorists a year, meanders from Virginia to Tennessee here, including Mount Mitchell that is the highest point in the eastern United States.

North Carolina's coastline is dominated by the Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras National Seashore but there is still undeveloped shore property to be had, especially if you don't need a large parcel of land. Move a few miles inland and affordable vacation property becomes more plentiful.
