No land has been worked harder than Pennsylvania land. In Colonial days the nation's first iron forges were constructed west of Philadelphia in Berks and Lebanon counties. High-grade anthracite coal extracted from Carbon and Lackawanna counties in the first half of the 19th century powered the Industrial Revolution. In the 1850s Edwin Drake drilled America's first oil wells out in Crawford County and the nation saw its first rush for black gold. By the 1880s every old growth tree in the great forests that once blanketed the northern part of the state had been lumbered to build houses and railroads. It was said there were more millionaires walking the streets of Williamsport than any place in the world then.
For most of the 20th century the land rested. The trees grew back and Pennsylvania's rural lands were reclaimed by hunters and fishermen and outdoorsmen. Then technology arrived to unleash natural gas stored in the Marcellus Shale that lies in the rocks a mile beneath the Keystone State. With the coming of hydraulic fracturing in the early 2000s Pennsylvania is once again undergoing a rural land boom.
