Pennsylvania

No land has been worked harder than Pennsylvania land. In Colonial days the nation's first iron forges were constructed west of Philadelphia in Berks and Lebanon counties. High-grade anthracite coal extracted from Carbon and Lackawanna counties in the first half of the 19th century powered the Industrial Revolution. In the 1850s Edwin Drake drilled America's first oil wells out in Crawford County and the nation saw its first rush for black gold. By the 1880s every old growth tree in the great forests that once blanketed the northern part of the state had been lumbered to build houses and railroads. It was said there were more millionaires walking the streets of Williamsport than any place in the world then.

For most of the 20th century the land rested. The trees grew back and Pennsylvania's rural lands were reclaimed by hunters and fishermen and outdoorsmen. Then technology arrived to unleash natural gas stored in the Marcellus Shale that lies in the rocks a mile beneath the Keystone State. With the coming of hydraulic fracturing in the early 2000s Pennsylvania is once again undergoing a rural land boom.

The briskest land sales in Pennsylvania occur in the northeast counties of Monroe, Pike and Wayne in the Pocono Mountains. Once the playground of vacationers and honeymooners, Pocono land is increasingly being developed as bedroom communities for New Yorkers and Philadelphians not daunted by a two-hour, high-speed commute to work.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike was the world's first modern "superhighway" when it opened in the 1930s, allowing motorists to speed from Philadelphia in the east to Pittsburgh across the state in the west in five hours. A better way to inspect Pennsylvania lands is on Scenic Route 6 across the northern tier that meanders 440 miles into four Pennsylvania Heritage Areas and two National Heritage Areas. Lauded as one of the country's outstanding touring roads, PA Route 6 ducks in and out of Victorian towns like Wellsboro and more than a half million acres of the Allegheny National Forest.
