by Brandon Swartzlander Midwest Farm & Land Company When it comes to hunting, Illinois has a lot to offer, but hunters know that Illinois is particularly popular for whitetail deer, waterfowl, and wild turkey. Whether you’re an expert or a novice, there’s nothing quite like hunting on your own land. If you’re looking for hunting properties in the Prairie State here are some important characteristics to keep an eye out for. The Land of Lincoln is chock-full of good hunting properties, but if you’re going to take the plunge and make an investment by buying land, you should be sure it’s the best one possible. Read on to see my recommendations for great hunting properties.
  1. Habitat Diversity: Changing seasons, drought, or extreme winter weather won’t take as much of a toll on your property if there is a diverse habitat. You’ll likely come across more deer thanks to the protection against shortages in food or cover.
  2. Established Food Plots: The quickest way to identify a whitetail hotspot? Find a place with an established food source. Areas with oak trees can also attract more deer as they’re one of the animal’s preferred food sources.
  3. Water Source: Narrow down your search by looking exclusively for properties with water sources like rivers or creeks. Depending on the area if water sources are scarce you can bet that you’ll find more deer flocking to your property in search of water.
  4. Easy Access: What good is land with a lot of game if you can’t easily access your property’s blind or stand? Don’t make your hunting experience any more difficult by buying land that is complicated to maneuver or with hunting spots in hard-to-reach places.
  5. Sufficient Cover: If you’re a deer hunter then you know that whitetails look for safe places to lay their heads. Land with good bedding areas are more likely to attract deer and ensure they stay on your property.
  6. Clear Road Network: There are a few reasons road networks are important. First, they allow you to move easily about the property so that you can maintain food plots and keep an eye on stand sites for maintenance or upgrades. Being able to drive through the property can also keep your scent from penetrating areas where you intend to hunt.
  7. Recent Information: When buying land for hunting buying from an owner who has trail cameras or harvest photos and reports can help you determine the quality of the game that calls that property home.
As you embark on the search for your ideal hunting property in Illinois I hope you’ll keep these 7 characteristics in mind. Finding a property with the right mix of each can assure you’re making the best purchase for your needs. Whether you’re looking for a property to hunt deer or duck, I have some great ones to offer!
