Texas has more acres for sale than any other state, not only because Texas has more acres but because 95% of its land is in private hands. Land sales in Texas changed forever on January 10, 1901 when an oil well tapping a salt dome in East Texas produced a gusher the likes of which had never been seen before. The Spindletop oil field was the most productive ever discovered and the Texas Oil boom was underway.

Before oil was discovered Texas was mostly an agricultural state. It still has more farms than any other state but it is also a leader in technology, aerospace, medicine and petrochemicals. Although the popular image of a Texan is a cowboy riding the open range, any type of land is available in the Lone Star State.

East Texas is a region of longleaf pines and widely dispersed population; West Texas is a land of impossibly long horizons, rugged mountains rising through the desert and widely dispersed population. Water lovers can hover near the 600 miles of Gulf Coast or seek land along one of the 3,700 named streams or 15 major rivers in Texas. Lakefront property can be had around one of the state’s 100 artificial reservoirs.

South Texas is home to some of the country’s most celebrated hunting ranches, anchoring the state’s $2 billion hunting industry. The historic 825,000-acre King Ranch can be found here between Brownsville and Corpus Christi. Up in North Texas the 525,000-acre W.T. Waggoner ranch is the largest in the country behind a single fence. Ranches over 1,000 acres are common real estate listings in Texas.

The hottest land market in Texas is the Hill Country centered around the Austin-San Antonio corridor. These 25 counties have emerged as the most popular retirement destination in the United States outside Florida.
