Or so the story has gone in Roswell since 1947 when the Roswell Army Air Field reported having recovered a crashed "flying disk." Now each summer the town celebrates the "UFO Incident" with a weekend festival. An even more celebrated festival is staged each fall in the state's biggest city, Albuquerque when the International Balloon Fiesta lifts off. Pictures of the New Mexico landscape have spread across the country since artist Georgia O'Keeffe arrived in Taos in 1929. Most New Mexico land is for sale in these sublime counties.

If all you know of New Mexico are O'Keeffe's riveting images and the desolate backgrounds of Breaking Bad, you are missing the real New Mexico. The Land of Enchantment dazzles visitors with its unique natural attractions. Carlsbad Caverns shows off the world's seventh-largest underground chamber in southeast New Mexico.
