Dubois is a small town in west-central Wyoming located in the upper Wind River Valley at an elevation of about 7,000 feet (2,100 meters). Dubois has a high-elevation continental climate that is often described as a high-desert mountain climate because it combines cool temperatures with relatively low precipitation. History

Dubois has a rich history rooted in Native American culture, exploration, ranching, and frontier settlement. Long before European Americans arrived, the area was used seasonally by the Eastern Shoshone people, who hunted and traveled through the Wind River Valley. During the early nineteenth century, fur trappers and mountain men explored the region as part of the Rocky Mountain fur trade. Permanent settlement began in the late 1800s when ranchers, traders, and homesteaders were attracted to the fertile valley and abundant natural resources. The community was originally known as Never Sweat and later as Du Bois, named after French-American trader and rancher Fred Dubois. The spelling was eventually simplified to Dubois. Throughout the twentieth century, the town developed as a center for cattle ranching, tourism, and outdoor recreation, benefiting from its location along the route to Yellowstone National Park. Today, Dubois preserves much of its Old West character through its historic buildings, museums, and ranching traditions while serving as a gateway to the mountains, forests, and national parks of northwestern Wyoming.
