History

Stites has a rich history. Founded in 1897 on the lower South Fork Clearwater, it became the terminus of the Clearwater branch of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1900. Stites grew and prospered, since it was the shipping center for the region. One major route led up to Camas Prairie and the booming farm towns of Grangeville & Cottonwood. Another major route went over a high pass into Elk City and its mines and the new mining boomtowns of the Buffalo Area.
Early Stites went from a tent town to having five saloons, three blacksmith shops, two ice houses, five hotels, four livery barns, three general merchandise stores, three grain warehouses, two assay offices, and a weekly newspaper.
