History
Columbus Township, located in St. Clair County, Michigan, was officially organized on March 11th, 1837, and named in honor of the explorer Christopher Columbus. Originally founded as an agricultural and postal stop, it evolved into a prominent rail hub where a 12-year-old Thomas Edison held his first job.
1832 (Gratiot Turnpike): Settlement in the area was spurred by the construction of the Fort Gratiot Turnpike (now known as Gratiot Road), which provided a critical transportation route through the dense, early oak and ash forests.
Today, Columbus Township retains much of its rural charm. It has evolved into a peaceful community that blends a rich agricultural heritage with newer residential developments, making it a popular base for commuters working in nearby cities like Richmond and Port Huron.
