Built in 1939 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the dam created one of New Mexico's largest lakes, ideal for outdoor adventures.Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy catching walleye, largemouth bass, white bass, flathead catfish, channel catfish, bluegill, and crappie. Boaters have access to nine public boat ramps, with five located in the northern area and four in the southern area of the lake. Conchas Lake State Park provides numerous camping options, including 500 primitive campsites along Cove Shoreline and Central Shoreline.Visitors can reach Conchas Lake via New Mexico State Road 104, about 29 miles northwest of Tucumcari and 75 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Open year-round, the park allows advance reservations for camping. The surrounding area features scenic coves, canyons, and sandy beaches, perfect for hiking, birding, and appreciating nature.SPECIFIC UNIT LOCATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS:UNIT 2 - Closest to the highway. Highway 104 actually splits Unit 2 in half. Power is available in parts of the western half, on the southwest side of the highway.UNIT 3 - Magnolia is the main road in Unit 3. Power lines run along Magnolia, with additional lines branching off on various streets. Underground phone cables are present in several blocks of Unit 3. This unit starts about 1/3 of a mile east of the highway and contains several residences. You need to take Highway 104, which runs from Tucumcari to Las Vegas.Take Magnolia Road off Highway 104. Magnolia is the first road about 1/4 to 1/2 mile north of Garita Creek and heads east. Follow Magnolia for about 2 miles (refer to maps). Magnolia continues straight into Unit 4. A road breaks off to the right about 1/4 to 1/2 mile before the old mobile home on the right. Follow the circled 10 and 11 on the map. Turn right on this road; you’ll go under the electric lines. On the map, Magnolia keeps going and exits the right side of the map, marking where Unit 4A begins. Turn right (down on the page); this route follows lots 21, 20, 19, and 18. You’ll reach a creek crossing, which is somewhat rocky—walk it before attempting to cross. I made it in a rental car, but conditions may have changed. Cross the creek, and after about 100 yards, you’ll return to the main road. Turn right and follow this road toward the highway. After approximately 1/2 mile, you’ll encounter a huge washed-out section of the road.DO NOT SPEED, or you’ll end up in a 12-foot ravine. THE ROAD IS WASHED OUT AND NOT VISIBLE UNTIL YOU’RE ALMOST ON TOP OF IT!WALKING THIS ROAD FIRST IS RECOMMENDED. It is relatively level. Once you identify the washed-out section, proceed carefully.UNIT 4A - Starts where Unit 3 ends, about 2 miles from the highway. Magnolia is the main road through this unit, with power and phone cables running along it.>
