History

Parma’s history reaches back to the earliest days of settlement in the Treasure Valley. The area lies near the site of Old Fort Boise, established by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1834 and later abandoned in 1855. The community also has a direct connection to the Oregon Trail, with the historic route passing through what is now Parma. The arrival of the Oregon Short Line Railroad in the 1880s helped transform the region, providing farmers with a vital means of transporting crops, livestock and other goods to growing markets.
Irrigation was equally important to Parma’s development. Water projects transformed the naturally dry Snake River Plain into productive agricultural country, allowing farms, orchards and livestock operations to flourish. The Black Canyon Irrigation District became an important part of this agricultural landscape. Today, Parma retains the agricultural character established by those early settlers, with farming, ranching and irrigation continuing to shape the community and surrounding countryside.
